The workshop we attended was actually for something far bigger, but sometimes it’s the littlest things that impress us in the biggest ways. We had gone to a two day workshop put on by Dr. Bryan Weiss, noted psychiatrist, hypnotherapist, and past life researcher. During the first day, Dr. Weiss led a guided meditation that was supposed to be more of a warm-up for other mediations to come that would delve deeper into the topics that we had gone to see. Although I would gain a great deal from the entire weekend, it was this one experiment that profoundly affected the way I see everyday objects in the world around us and their potential to interact with us.
We were asked to turn to someone that we hadn’t come with, and did not know, and exchange some personal object with that person. Lee was to my right, and the lady seated to my left was a perfect stranger. I gave her a wooden pen that I had turned in my shop and she gave me a wedding ring. Lee found a lady sitting close to her and was given a set of keys. Dr. Weiss then guided us from breathing to relaxation to a deeper level of consciousness as the mediation progressed. We were then asked to connect with the object we were given and feel the first impressions that came to us.
After the meditation was over, we once again exchanged the items and had a few moments to talk to the people we had just met. Unfortunately, the impressions that I had received from the woman’s wedding ring didn’t seem to mean anything to her although they seemed quite vivid to me. Her mother, however, did say that the ring had been in the family for several generations and maybe I was picking up on an energy from a time farther past. It was a possible explanation, but not one that was very satisfying for either myself or the woman whose ring I’d held.
Although I believe in many things in this world and beyond, the majority of them have been hard fought battles for inclusion into my personal philosophies. I’m truly a skeptic at heart. A few other people around us seemed to have similar experiences as mine; and, had that been the entirety of the experience I would have chalked it up to a pleasant meditation.
It wasn’t until I turned to Lee’s little group that I understood the power of what had just happened. The woman that Lee was talking to was visibly shaken and almost in tears. The emotion in her eyes was far beyond anything that was superficial or even faked. Through the mediation, Lee had seen images of a birthday party that the family had thrown. She described, not in fragmented thoughts, but vivid images, a little girl and a dress she was wearing. It was the little girl’s birthday. She knew detailed information about the home where the party had taken place. In a second vision, Lee had a clear impression of the family at a graduation. Throughout she felt the presence of someone trying to make contact with the family; a man. She described feeling as if she WAS that person. After describing her impressions of the male presence, the woman became even more emotional and spoke of a brother that had just died. The brother had been at the birthday party for the young girl, and the graduation had been the first time the family had been together after his death.
Some manifestation of the energy surrounding that family had resonated with Lee in a way that had brought her to that moment in time and tuned her into a message from someone far beyond that moment.
Always the inquisitor, I would have been moved, but still not convinced if it hadn’t been for what came next. It was my turn to hear the impressions from the woman who I had traded objects with. It started out on pretty shaky ground as she told me she saw me writing. I had given her a pen! Writing seemed a pretty short leap and hardly anything reaching the realm of universal energies or mysteries. Then she continued. She saw me flipping through papers. She said I was reading them but didn’t really care what was in them. She also described a space that I was in that finally opened my eyes. The place she described is something that would have been beyond the normal experiences of anyone not directly associated with it. The images she relayed to me weren’t mere images from the pool of common life experience as adults in a working world, they transcended our strangeness to each other and connected on a level I hadn’t expected. She never once waivered in her telling of her vision; asking or hinting at the next step she would take and waiting for me to give her a hint as to which direction she should go. I could tell in her tone that she didn’t understand the images she had received, but I reassured her that they were indeed quite true to my own existence. She perfectly described a normal day in my life as a pilot in an environment that would have been quite abnormal to her. She went so far as to describe a seventies vintage counter in the crew room where I signed those aforementioned papers. She also went beyond what she could have learned from the physical world, even if we had known each other, or she known me, and described my emotions and feelings. That was the turning point for me.
Somehow the energies that are latent in everything that we touch and interact with on a regular basis are vibrationally stored within those objects like a hard drive of subtle energy. It’s something that’s been talked about in new-age and magickal circles for generations yet it seems like such a foreign concept; so unscientific. We are willing to accept that a simple crystal can actually detect electromagnetic radiation in the form of radio waves because the youth of the past used to build these simple crystal radios for fun, but we find ourselves questioning the nature of subtle energies in other objects. We haven’t even begun to tap a small fraction of the spectrum of energies in this world so it is conceivable that such energies can, and are, transmitted, stored, decoded, and ultimately shared with those who interact with them.
Not everyone in the workshop experienced such intense heightened awareness of the subtle powers of nature and the world. Obviously some are more sensitive to these subtle energies, but it is likely that we all have the potential to cultivate our sensitivity through practice and deeper states of consciousness that help filter out the white noise that is our daily companion and blocks our awareness of those energies that require much greater attention. That said, I think we all, at times, tune into these energies when we are least expecting it; when our minds find a moment of peace. I also believe that we are more sensitive to certain forms of energy over others. One person might tune into energies of the past, while another might have greater sensitivity to feelings of love. Unfortunately, emotions that produce so called negative energies can often times be very powerful, and I think energies that resonate with loneliness, loss, fear, anger, and hurt are sometimes the ones that make their way to the forefront.
The practical implications of the insights that I learned that day are many. First of all, the tools we use to focus our energies in things like ritual and magick DO have a basis in reality when it comes to offering transmission lines to the universe as a whole. Secondly, it’s important to remember that, even if we aren’t naturally sensitive to certain energies, there will be times when we attune to feelings and emotions that seem to come from out of nowhere. When this happens it might be worth looking for the sources of such uneasy feelings and clearing them the best that we can. Finally, we need to realize that our energies can be transmitted through more than just our actions and words. A partner or friend may pick up on unsettling energies left behind long after we are gone. It is important to be honest in action and speech if there are things that are troubling us. If we are unable to verbalize those things it’s important to realize that our energies still go forth; we can’t see them, we may not be aware we’ve done it, and we may never know the extent to which those energies affect people outside our narrow vision of our daily world. When we are dealing with emotions that might hurt another or cause confusion it is important for us to ground those emotions and feelings within ourselves to not only help clarify out own minds, but also neutralize the energies we put forth until we can figure out more worldly ways of coping with or dealing with the issues we face.
